Chapter Nine
“Would you like some more?” Reed held up the bowl of beef stew and the spoon.
Daniel shook his head. “No, thanks. What with lunch, the afternoon snack, and this feast for dinner, my lazy beta ass is stuffed.” He frowned. “I mean my stomach is. I don’t remember willow bark making me so fuzzy-headed.”
Reed placed the bowl on his lap. “I think Mave adds something else in with it. Do you mind if I eat the rest of the stew?”
Daniel waved with his free hand. “Go ahead. You don’t eat enough and are too damn skinny.”
“Oh. Um, thanks.” Feeling self-conscious, he shoved a big spoonful in his mouth. He really shouldn’t be surprised at the beta’s observation. Reed knew he was scrawny. Under normal circumstances, Daniel would probably never find him attractive.
“Hey!” When Reed looked up at him, Daniel grimaced. “I didn’t mean for it to come out that way. I meant that you’ve been underfed by your pack. That’s all. I hate the way Randall and his boys eat all the good food while leaving the rest of you with scraps. Assholes,” he added before closing his eyes.
Reed grinned and ate another big helping. “It’s okay,” he said as he chewed. “Soon, I’ll be away from here. I’ll get a job with the humans and buy my own food. As much as I like.” He hoped that would be the case. He really had no idea what it cost to live among the upright apes.
“Some humans go hungry, too, you know.” Daniel opened his eyes again. “It can be a hard life for them, and they’re raised to survive in their environment. It’s difficult for any shifter to get by in their world, especially so for an omega.”
Reed couldn’t help but frown. He placed the bowl on the tray and wrapped his arms around his knees. “I’m not stupid. I know it will be hard. I’m sure I can manage. I’m a tireless worker and I’m not as naïve as you think.”
Daniel sighed. “Oh, baby, I didn’t mean to imply that you were. I know you’re smart and brave. It’s only that I’m worried about you. Omegas aren’t meant to live on their own, among humans or otherwise. And…” He licked his lips. “Please believe me when I say that life in a pack can be great. Ben is very happy where he is.”
Reed felt a spurt of anger. He would have typically hid it, but knowing Daniel pretty well by that time, he was sure the beta wouldn’t punish him for letting his feelings show. Popping up, he began to gather everything onto the tray.
“I believe you about Ben. I’m sure he is. All Ben ever wanted was someone to love him and treat him well. I’m not like him, remember?” He stood. “Pack life is boring. Living out in the sticks is boring. I want more and different. I thought you if anyone would understand that.”
“Baby, I do. It’s just…”
“Please don’t. Don’t bother to explain. I get what you’re saying.
